KAPLAN & COMPANY — PRESS RELEASE — FORMER SUPREME COURT CLERK AND TAKE CARE BLOG PUBLISHER JOSHUA MATZ JOINS KAPLAN & COMPANY, LLP

Known for Starting a Groundbreaking Blog Devoted to Providing Cutting-Edge Legal Analysis, Matz Joins Firm Founded by Robbie Kaplan

NEW YORK – Kaplan & Company, LLP, the new law firm headed by commercial and civil rights litigator Roberta (“Robbie”) Kaplan, announced today that Joshua Matz will be joining the firm as Of Counsel. A former law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, Matz is a widely published constitutional scholar, and has written on a broad array of legal issues in publications such as the Washington Post, The Guardian, The Atlantic, ACS Blog and WIRED Magazine. Matz is also the founder and publisher of Take Care, a website that provides up-to-date legal analysis of questions raised by the Trump Administration’s actions and policies. In June 2014, Matz and Professor Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School published an award-winning book, Uncertain Justice: The Roberts Court and the Constitution. Next year, they will publish their second book together, To End a Presidency: The Power of Impeachment.

“Joshua Matz and Kaplan & Company share the same values and commitment to advancing the public interest,” said Robbie Kaplan, Founding Partner of Kaplan & Company, LLP. “Joshua truly is a walking, talking, one-man encyclopedia with deep knowledge and wisdom about the grave and pressing constitutional issues facing our nation in these troubling times. We are thrilled to have him join us at our firm.”

“Kaplan & Company offers a compelling new vision of the law firm environment—one that matches peerless advocacy with genuine respect for its lawyers and staff,” said Joshua Matz. “As the legal profession evolves in this uncertain era, the time has come for a law firm steeped in humane values and one committed to making the world a better place.”

Working with the firm of Gupta Wessler PLLC, Matz is part of the legal team in the high-profile CREW v. Trump and District of Columbia v. Trump lawsuits, which challenge the President for violating the Emoluments Clauses of the United States Constitution. Earlier this year, Matz represented 50 leading legal scholars as two federal appeals courts reviewed the legality of Trump’s proposed travel ban, penning an influential amicus brief that was cited and quoted by the Fourth Circuit in its en banc opinion deeming the ban unconstitutional. Matz, alongside Kaplan, will continue representing that group of legal scholars in the travel ban litigation at the Supreme Court.

Prior to joining Kaplan & Company, Matz was an integral part of the legal team in Barber v. Bryant, an appeals court case challenging the legality of Mississippi’s discriminatory, anti-LGBTQ rights law (HB 1523), in which he wrote an amicus brief on behalf of top church-state scholars. While previously atRobbins, Russell, Englert, Orseck, Untereiner & Sauber LLP, Matz also worked as an appellate and trial litigator on a wide array of commercial cases, ranging from complex bankruptcy and contract disputes to allegations of fraud on the government.

In addition to clerking for Justice Kennedy, Matz served as law clerk for Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and for Judge J. Paul Oetken of the Southern District of New York. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laude, earned a master’s degree with distinction from Oxford University, and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where he served as Articles & Book Reviews Chair of the Harvard Law Review and president of the American Constitution Society.

Forbes named Matz to its “30 under 30” Law & Policy List for 2014, and, in 2016, named him an “Alumni All-Star” of past Law & Policy honorees.

While Of Counsel at Kaplan & Company, LLP, Matz will continue working with Gupta Wessler PLLC in an Of Counsel position at their offices in Washington, D.C.
