Salary Increases At Elite Litigation Firm Say Associates

Just when you think Biglaw salary increases are finished...

Williams & Connolly isn’t the easiest firm to crack open. The top-notch litigation firm prides itself on its closed feel — laterals are a rarity, partners are mostly elevated from within, and the firm generally avoids promoting “marquee” lawyers in favor of a firm-wide brand of quality. This makes Williams & Connolly a bit of a classic throwback in the anarchic “eat what you kill” world of modern Biglaw, but it works for them and more importantly their clients.

But it also makes them a real pain to cover because gathering intel from inside the black box is more difficult than at other firms. During the salary craze of 2016, Williams & Connolly, whose unique pay scale historically put them slightly above market, found itself beset by rivals jacking up pay. At the time, tipsters pointed out that the new normal left Williams & Connolly behind: “W&C managed to go under radar through recruiting despite now paying less than market firm from second year on.”

We’re now hearing scattered reports from anonymous associates claiming that Williams & Connolly has addressed this issue and bumped up associate salaries. Unfortunately, we don’t have many specifics beyond that. So it’s up to you Williams & Connolly readers to give us the goods on this characteristically quiet salary hike.
