Yeehaw! Leading Texas Boutique Trots Out Associate Raises
The salary scale is compressed at the top, but who's going to complain about a higher salary?
It was just last week that we discussed law firms that were tiny, but whose salaries were mighty. Now we have news that yet another boutique law firm — this time, one in Texas — has decided to giddy-up alongside Biglaw’s best in 2018’s summer salary wars.
Hot on the heels of its win for Texas Lawyer’s 2018 Small Firm Litigation Department of the Year, Smyser Kaplan & Veselka has announced a new salary scale for all seven of its associates. Check out the new scale, below:
- Class of 2017 — $190,000
- Class of 2016 — $200,000
- Class of 2015 — $220,000
- Class of 2014 — $235,000
- Class of 2013 — $260,000
- Class of 2012 — $275,000
- Class of 2011 — $285,000

Although SKV has matched the Milbank/Cravath scale through associates’ third year, their pay is compressed for each year thereafter, such that seventh-year associates are making $40,000 less than associates at either of the firms that set the new salary scale. Git along, little dogies. 🙁
Money is still money, so we doubt that anyone is complaining too much, and bless their hearts if they do. Congratulations to everyone at Smyster Kaplan & Veselka!
Remember, we are covering this trend extensively, so please drop us a line — text (646-820-8477) or email (subject line: “[Firm Name] Raises Salaries”) — when you know of another firm making a compensation move. Please include the memo if available. You can take a photo of the memo and send it via text or email if you don’t want to forward the original PDF or Word file. All sources are kept confidential.
