Attorney Shot And Killed, The Suspect Is A 'Longtime Friend And Client'

The victim had submitted his retirement paperwork the day before.

T. Edward Page, an attorney at Thiros & Thiros in Merrillville, Indiana, who worked as a public defender for the last 10 years and was a former magistrate in Lake Superior Court, was shot and killed outside of his home yesterday. Police say the suspect is in custody, an 83-year-old man they characterize as a “longtime friend and client.” According to investigators, the suspect was at Page’s house to pick up documents, though they declined to provide an motive, citing a “fluid” investigation.

Lt. James Gonzales, a police spokesperson, said the suspect was a current client of the victim’s in a civil matter. The suspect’s two daughters were at the scene of homicide at the time of the incident, and they were interviewed and released by police. Also present at the scene was Page’s husband, who police say “tackled and disarmed” the suspect.

As reported by the Chicago Tribune, condolences were pouring out in memory of Page, who was a integral part of the community:

“On behalf of the Hobart Police Department, we would like to express our deepest condolences to Judge Page’s family, his Lake County prosecutors and Lake County public defenders family and to his friends,” Gonzales said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon at the Hobart Police Department. “Judge Page was a well-respected judge, attorney and resident of Hobart, and he will be sorely missed by all.”

Marce Gonzalez Jr., chief public defender who worked with the victim, said the legal community was “so deeply saddened and in shock.” He also said that Page submitted his retirement paperwork the day before he was killed, and had planned on teaching:

“He was going to work through the last day of this month and then spend his time teaching and as a senior judge,” Gonzalez said.

Others in the local legal community also expressed their shock over the incident:

Lake County Bar Association President Steven Sersic said “our community is shocked and saddened at Ted’s tragic passing.”

“He was known as a lawyer’s lawyer, a very compassionate person and a good man,” Sersic said.

Our thoughts are with Page’s family and friends during this difficult time.
