Biglaw Practice Leader Shot And Killed In Domestic Dispute

A suspect was arrested for his death after a brief SWAT standoff.

Gun violence in Chicago this weekend left one dead and more than two dozen wounded. On Monday night, another Chicago area person was shot and killed — and this person was the founder of a Biglaw firm’s Supreme Court practice group.

Stephen Shapiro, 72, was the founder of Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court and appellate practice, and he was gunned down in his own home on Monday in what police are saying was a domestic-related shooting. A suspect has been arrested. Here are more details from the American Lawyer:

Stephen M. Shapiro

The suspect, who is yet to be identified, had fled Shapiro’s home in Northfield, Illinois, and barricaded himself in his apartment in nearby Winnetka. His arrest occurred following a brief standoff with a SWAT team, according to local reports.

According to Shapiro’s bio, the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate practice had grown to be the largest in the country under his leadership. Before his death, he argued 30 cases before the Supreme Court and brief more than 200 cases.

This is a developing story. When there is additional news, we will update this post.

We here at Above the Law would like to extend our condolences to Stephen Shapiro’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

UPDATE (8/16/18): Charges have been filed against Shapiro’s accused killer, his brother-in-law, John Gately III. Click here for more information.
