Biglaw Firm Loses Over A Dozen Partners As More Firms Spread To Boston

That's a lot of partners leaving.

Well, this has got to sting. LeClairRyan has lost 18 attorneys — 13 of whom were partners at the firm — to Freeman Mathis & Gary. Freeman is an Atlanta-based firm that is joining the trend of opening up a Boston office, largely staffed by the fruits of the LeClairRyan talent raid.

The list of partners that moved to Freeman Mathis from LeClairRyan is: Jeff Alitz, Janet Barringer, Catherine Bednar, Paul Boylan, Ben Dunlap, Michael Giunta, Neil Hartzell, Warren Hutchison, Kevin Kenneally, Tom McCraw, Nancy Reimer, Dave Slocum, and Michael Weinberg. Kenneally, once the head of LeClairRyan’s Boston office, will take on the leadership role in the office of his new firm.

As reported by Law.com, the co-founder of Freeman Mathis, which has been in expansion mode since 2013, is excited about his firm’s latest move:

“This is an amazingly attractive group of lawyers,” said Ben Mathis, Freeman Mathis’ co-founder and managing partner. “They, from day one, are in our key practice areas and have partner-level expertise in all our key practice areas and that’s very hard to find.”

For their part, the powers that be at LeClairRyan are handling the loss with the appropriate amount of grace:

“We wish our former colleagues well at their new firm, which provides a platform that is likely better suited to support their practices,” said the firm’s New Haven, Connecticut-based litigation department leader, Elizabeth Acee. “As we did in 2018, LeClairRyan will continue to focus on growth concentrated on market segments that provide diverse business and litigation services to our clients, while generating better profits per partner at the firm.”

Best of luck to the all the attorneys lateraling onto the next chapter of their career.
