It would have been a painful merger. There is so much overlap between the two firms’ practice areas.

— a former Squire Patton Boggs partner commenting on some preliminary trans-Atlantic tie-up talks between the U.S.-based firm and the U.K.’S Addleshaw Goddard. These merger talks reportedly started, and ended, in late 2018. Addleshaws had previously discussed a combination with Hunton & Williams before things fell flat in 2017.
