We now have 70+ statements from Biglaw on racial injustice. Will this pressure other firms to do something? We sure hope so.

Friends,

We begin a new week deeply troubled by recent events and the state of our Union. A week ago, the senseless, brutal killing of George Floyd at the hands of police officers and the tragic killing of Ahmaud Arbery earlier this year brought to the fore again the shameful, pervasive reality of racism which remains deeply rooted in our country.

We know that the effects of racism are seen not only in the policed streets, but also in the halls of respected companies and successful law firms. The institutional barriers to success and prosperity entrenched by systemic racism are not to be forgotten as we address the realities of physical threats to African-Americans and other communities of color.

We struggle for the words that can adequately express our emotions about the injustices in our society, yet remain committed to Katten effecting lasting change. Along with many others in the broader business community, we view it as our responsibility to engage in a genuine conversation about race within our firm so that we can all have a broader understanding of each other’s perspectives. That understanding is key to the transformation of minds and hearts that is necessary in this pivotal time.

We reiterate our unwavering commitment to creating an inclusive Katten, a firm where each of us brings our collective identities, backgrounds and perspectives to serve our clients, each other and the broader community.

Roger and Noah
