In the midst of a global crisis, centuries of injustice have ignited in the United States. While this current situation may seem to be a uniquely American problem, it affects us all. In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

We are, all of us, struggling with our own challenges right now. At this moment, it is more important than ever that we listen and care for each other, that we show compassion.
We can start by acknowledging the pain our Black colleagues are feeling right now. The outrage we all feel is magnified by the lived experience of enduring racism and inequality. Even this pandemic is disproportionately affecting Black lives.

The quote I shared above comes from a letter King wrote from jail in Birmingham, Alabama, and it’s followed by these words:
“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
Yesterday marked the end of Asian Pacific American Heritage month, and today marks the beginning of Pride – months when we reflect on our past and celebrate our differences. Our diversity is a source of strength. Let’s use that strength to support each other and create a more just world.
