Am Law 50 Firm Lays Off 4 Percent Of Its Global Workforce

That's more than 100 lawyers and staff.

As with all things in Biglaw as of late, with good news tends to come some pretty godawful news. As firms work to become leaner through these tough times, lawyers and staff members may unexpectedly find themselves on the unemployment line. Hot on the heels of announcing the reversal of its COVID-19 austerity measures, news of Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner’s global layoffs has come to light.

As part of a business review called “Project Advance,” Bryan Cave has not only reorganized and combined some of its practice groups and appointed leaders for its three new primary global businesses (corporate and finance transactions; real estate; litigation and investigations), but the firm has also conducted a swath of layoffs. As reported by Law.com International, BCLP has laid off about 4 percent of its global workforce — which means that an estimated 118 lawyers and staff have been let go.

BCLP co-chairs Lisa Mayhew and Steve Baumer said in the statement: “Project Advance will further transform and elevate how we serve our clients, laying the foundation for our next phase of growth internationally. This is a multi-year strategy to further extend BCLP’s leadership around real estate as an asset class, corporate and finance transactions, and litigation and investigations, where we see significant growth opportunities for BCLP.”

Best of luck to all those who are affected by the layoffs at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner.
