Biglaw Firm Announces Raises, Makes Adjustment To Market Compensation Grid

Small change? Sure, but still above market.

California-based Biglaw firm Irell & Manella has delighted associates with raises, like so many of their peer firms. With $132,903,000 in gross revenue last year, the firm’s ranked 183rd on the Am Law 200, but they are showing they have the cash to meet — and beat — market compensation.

Effective July 1, this will be the salary scale at Irell:

Eagle-eyed observers will note, rather than the $202,500 for the incoming class of 2021 that Davis Polk led with, Irell has bumped the scale up to $205,000 for the stump year. (Other firms have left the class of 2021 off the grid entirely — probably because they aren’t at the firm yet, hell, they haven’t even taken the bar exam yet — so others may be intending to bump up that class as Irell has done.) It’s not a huge difference, but with so many firms just copying the existing scale, every change matters.

Remember everyone, we depend on your tips to stay on top of this stuff. So when your firm matches, please text us (646-820-8477) or email us (subject line: “[Firm Name] Raises”). Please include the memo if available. You can take a photo of the memo and send it via text or email if you don’t want to forward the original PDF or Word file.
