Biglaw Firm Gets To The Business Of Raises AND High Biller Bonuses

Happy (money) days are here again.

Good times are back for folks at Winston & Strawn! After what could be characterized as a bumpy 2020 (and really, whose 2020 wasn’t — at least at times — shit) the firm’s back to handing out the big bucks to associates.

Back in September of 2020, we reported that the firm, ranked #45 on the latest Am Law 100 list, was letting go a number of associates and staff, and that was after they’d already cut partner compensation as part of their COVID-19 austerity measures. But we are very much in the “post” now, and Winston’s fortunes have turned around.

In December, the firm handed out market bonuses, and also got on the special bonus train earlier this year (and also announced an increase to the firm’s high biller pool), so things are very much back to normal at the firm. On June 11, they quickly matched the Milbank scale, but now that the slightly higher DPW scale is dominating the industry, they’re ready to match that as well.

You can read the full memo on the next page.

Plus, remember those increased high biller bonuses? The firm announced more details on those. The pool is anticipated to be at least 75 percent larger, and they’ll kick in at 2,100 hours (which is lower than the historical threshold). The scale of those bonuses is as follows:
