General Counsel Of The Oath Keepers Implicates Biglaw Firm In Bizarre Conspiracy Theory

Hoo boy! Strap in for some *wild* conspiracy theories!

definition of conspiracy theoryListen, I am not one for conspiracy theories but I’ve spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to decipher this one and have come up with nothing. So, consider this your fair warning.

Kellye SoRelle, a family lawyer from Texas and failed GOP candidate for the Texas House of Representatives, spent yesterday tweeting out some truly bizarre stuff. SoRelle is no stranger to controversy. Last month, she announced that, in addition to her role as general counsel for far-right militia the Oath Keepers, she was taking over acting president duties following the arrest of leader (and Yale Law alum) Stewart Rhodes in connection with the January 6th attempted coup.

SoRelle also made news when she, along with fired associate general counsel at Goosehead Insurance Paul Davis, filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. (That lawsuit garnered a lot of LOLs in legal circles when they filed an amended TRO motion using the completely fictional experiences of Gondor — as in Lord of the Rings — as precedent. While the case was ultimately dismissed, there was apparently a split amongst the plaintiffs regarding what strategy to pursue.)

Anyway, back to her head-scratcher theory.

As Steven Monacelli details, SoRelle dives into her theory that Jesuits rule the world. Implicated in this madness is a slew of organizations/people including the FISA courts, the FBI, BuzzFeed, Biglaw firm Perkins Coie, and its former partners Marc Elias and Michael Sussmann.

And while it is true that Perkins Coie’s Political Law Group did a lot of work for Democratic candidates (before it spun off into the Elias Law Group), the firm was also where Trump appointee to the Ninth Circuit, Eric Miller, was partner before he took the bench. So maybe not quite the conspirator SoRelle thinks it is.

Also listed in the web of theories in another former Perkins Coie partner, Michael Sussmann. He was charged by Special Counsel John Durham with one count of lying to James Baker, then the general counsel of the FBI, in 2016. Since then, Sussmann has been at the center of other right-wing theories, so at least this is familiar territory for him.

You can take a look at the “theory” — such as it is — below.

Charlie Kelly would be proud.
