It’s been about two weeks since the Uvalde school shooting, and as remembrances for the 19 children and two teachers lost in the massacre continue to pour in, one law school is doing something incredible to honor a little girl who hoped to someday become a lawyer before her life was cut short.
St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas, is currently collecting donations to fund a new memorial scholarship dedicated to Alexandria “Lexi” A. Rubio, who was just 10 years old when she was gunned down inside her elementary school classroom. According to her family, Lexi — who her mother says was a “budding feminist” — planned to attend St. Mary’s on a softball scholarship before attending law school.

Here are some additional details on the scholarship fund:
“The fund will award scholarships to St. Mary’s School of Law students who exemplify the spirit of Lexi’s intellectual curiosity, resilience and her deep commitment to family values,” reads a fundraising page. “Once fully funded, gifts to this endowed fund will support selected St. Mary’s students pursuing a legal education based on their financial need.”
Lexi won’t be able to fulfill her law school dreams, but this memorial scholarship may help someone else’s come true. St. Mary’s hopes to raise $50,000, and more than $16,000 in donations have already been made.
