The High Cost Of Freedom: Britney Spears Reportedly Pays Biglaw Firm More Than $4 Million In Legal Fees

The firm hit her bank account one more time -- and there should be nothing shocking about it.

Back in 2021, Britney Spears hired Greenberg Traurig partner Mathew Rosengart to free her from more than a decade of conservatorship. The “tough as nails” litigator (per Sean Penn) did, in fact, free the legendary pop star from her conservatorship, but as could be expected, his legal fees cost a pretty penny. And now, those legal fees are plastered in an all-caps headline on TMZ:

BRITNEY SPEARS PAID LAWYER MATHEW ROSENGART LAW FIRM $4.2M IN LEGAL FEES

Sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ, Britney has paid Rosengart’s firm $4,201,856 for the period November 2021 through March 2023. That represents the legal work Rosengart performed mostly after the conservatorship ended.

OH MY GOD. Can you believe it? Well… yeah.

Over the course of about a two-year period, Spears, a celebrity client in legal turmoil, was allegedly charged more than $4 million in fees for zealous representation to resolve a unique issue and all of the attendant matters that arose thereafter — like the seemingly never-ending case against her father as well as a book deal, to name just a few things.

When you hire a Biglaw firm, you’re going to pay Biglaw prices. Greenberg Traurig is an elite firm that brought in $2,171,720,000 in gross revenue in 2022. Fees like these are not at all out of the ordinary. Spears paid top dollar for her attorney’s talent. This should not be shocking.

In fact, the fees that TMZ cites here — if true — for Rosengart’s representation actually compare favorably to what Ms. Spears had to pay to Holland & Knight, including more than half a million for “media matters,” over the course of just eight months’ time (approximately $1.4 million) when nothing of note was accomplished. Rosengart, on the other hand, not only successfully defeated motions to have his client’s deposition taken but also filed numerous motions regarding her father, Jamie Spears, whose Willkie Farr lawyer was bullying and harassing the musical superstar through legal process.

If anything, the legal fees here were reasonable and fair. No wonder Britney “simply adore[s]” Mathew Rosengart.
