With layoffs and deferrals dotting the Biglaw landscape, many of America’s largest law firms are in a state of flux thanks to a turbulent economy. But at the same time, the biggest of Biglaw firms are still employing thousands and thousands of attorneys — and they’ve been quickly growing in size.
Which U.S. Biglaw firm is the biggest of them all? Law360 (sub. req.) can help us answer that question. Earlier this week, the website released its master list of the top 400 U.S.-based law firms by headcount, revealing that Kirkland maintained its stranglehold on the No. 1 spot, with over 300 more domestic attorneys than the firm in second place on the ranking.

Compared to last year’s ranking, the largest law firms in the U.S. grew by an average of 3.9%, with growth skewed toward nonpartner hires (up by 5.2%) over partner hires (up by 3.5%).

- Latham: 2,574 U.S. attorneys
- Greenberg Traurig: 2,113 U.S. attorneys
- Sidley: 1,822 U.S. attorneys
- Morgan Lewis: 1,721 U.S. attorneys
- Lewis Brisbois: 1,700 U.S. attorneys
- DLA Piper: 1,651 U.S. attorneys
- Holland & Knight: 1,649 U.S. attorneys
- Goodwin: 1,611 U.S. attorneys
- Jones Day: 1,554 U.S. attorneys
