Trump’s Legal Team On A Mission To ‘Alienate’ Federal Judge In January 6th Case

The move was "stunningly stupid."

Retired California Judge — and Jabot podcast guest — LaDoris Hazzard Cordell appeared on CNN last night with Kaitlan Collins talking about the former president’s legal troubles. Which legal troubles, you may ask. Fair question since Donald Trump now has more indictments than ex-wives, but we’re talking about the federal election interference/January 6th case in Washington D.C. Yesterday, Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that case would start on March 4th, just a day before the Super Tuesday primaries.

Trump’s legal team, led by Todd Blanche and John Lauro had quite the reaction to the news. And Cordell believes what they did actually may “alienate” Judge Chutkan. Cordell says it’s ridiculous that “Trump’s attorney compared their desire to delay the case to what happened in the case of Powell v. Alabama,” a 1930s case where nine Black youths were railroaded and not allowed to properly defend against allegations of raping two white women.

Cordell continued, “What the Trump team did was say that, ‘Well, what happened in that trial is what could happen here in this trial,’ which is absolutely absurd.”

Of course Trump has tons of resources to defend himself in this case, including,“experienced lawyers, a whole team of investigators.” So the comparison was “stunningly stupid.”

“A female judge, a Black judge, and to talk about that case and compare it to Trump’s case was absurd,” said Cordell.
