Top 50 Biglaw Firm Elects New Chair After Former Leader Steps Down Due To 'Health-Related' Reasons

Proskauer's new leader is looking forward to the firm enjoying even more success in the future.

handshake-2056023__340Back in December, Steven Ellis, chairman of Proskauer Rose, announced that he would be stepping down from his role due to health-related reasons. Ellis was due to lead the firm until its regular election cycle, slated for September 2025, but his sudden decision to bow out from his role set the stage for an election to take place this month. The results of that election are now in, and Proskauer has a new leader, effective April 2024.

Proskauer’s new chair elect is Timothy Mungovan. He’s worked at the firm for more than a decade and has taken on several leadership roles in the past — not only does he currently serve as chair of the firm’s securities litigation practice and as a member of the firm’s executive committee, but he’s also the immediate past chair of the firm’s litigation department.

In a brief statement given to the American Lawyer, Mungovan addressed his predecessor, noting that thanks to Ellis’s “tremendous leadership, Proskauer is experiencing great momentum.” He went on to look to the future, saying, “From cutting-edge transactions to high-stakes litigation and trials, there is significant opportunity across all our practices. I look forward to working with everyone at the firm to continue to execute on our strategic vision.”

In his own statement, Ellis said, “I have every confidence that Tim will continue to drive Proskauer forward as a destination firm for talent and clients across the globe.” During his time serving as the top Biglaw firm’s leader, Ellis responsibly guided the elite firm through the pandemic, including its best year ever in 2021. According to Am Law, the following year, Proskauer grew by 6.1% and saw its best performance to date in terms of total revenue and profits.

Congratulations to Steven Ellis on a job well done, and congratulations to Timothy Mungovan on his rise to the top of the firm.
