Law Students: Where Are Your Grades?

Law students grow more and more anxious with each day that passes without grades. What's going on?

Do your professors deserve an ‘F’?

Every year, almost every semester, we run numerous stories about professors being late in their submission of grades. Consider it a public service to law students across the country, because the Above the Law editors feel your pain. We all graduated from law school and experienced the same absurdity when it came to late grades. In fact, according to Facebook’s “On This Day” feature, eight years ago today I was complaining about a missing grade. We understand what you’re going through and how infuriated you are.

Exams concluded more than a month ago at most law schools, and law students grow more and more anxious with each day that passes without grades. The “grade deadline” at most law schools has come and gone, and students still don’t have all — or any — of their grades. The only excuse for professors here is that it’s still “early” in terms of missing grades for law students. We hate to say it, but we’re sure that some students will still be missing grades in about a month from now, which is absurd.

That background brings us to today’s grade decable. Over at Georgetown Law, we hear from tipsters that first-year students were supposed to receive all of their grades yesterday. They obviously haven’t, and they’re pretty pissed.

Here’s a little note that 1Ls received from the Registrar’s Office:

Civil Procedure, Legal Justice Seminar, and Torts grades are still under review and we will email you when they are posted to your transcript this week.

We apologize for any inconvenience or anxiety this delay may cause.

Well… at least they were nice about the fact that they’re screwing students?

We understand that first-years at the school only have their Contracts grade, and they’re in the middle of applying to jobs — many of which require transcripts. “I realize the grading process is complex and Georgetown wants to get it right, but waiting for 1L grades is already stressful,” says a student who was dissatisfied with the Registrar’s note. “It’s unacceptable for GULC to delay these grades without even a sentence of explanation. Students deserve better.” Considering the fact that tuition costs $59,850 per year at the school, students deserve much, much better.

We hope that all students at Georgetown Law receive their grades as soon as possible.

Are you still missing your grades without any explanation from your professors? Please email us (subject line: “[Law School] Missing Grades”) and we’ll see what we can do to speed up the process. You can also text us at 646-820-8477. Thanks!
