Vault ‘Quality Of Life’ Rankings: The Best Midsize Law Firms To Work For (2020)

Did your law firm make the cut this time around?

Last month, Vault published the 2020 edition of all manner of its closely watched rankings for the largest law firms in the country, proving that money — in the form of Cravath’s perennially competitive pay scale — can buy prestige and happiness.

But what about the nation’s midsize and regional firms? Which ones are the best to work for, and will young associates be happy there as associates? With recruiting season nearly upon us, Vault recently released the latest edition of its list of the 25 Best Midsize Law Firms to Work For. Just like its main Biglaw rankings, so many associates responded to this year’s survey that Vault has decided to expand its Midsize Best Law Firms to Work For ranking from 20 firms to 25 firms.

Associates at firms with 200 attorneys or fewer were asked to rank their own law firms based on categories most relevant to their overall quality of life, including overall satisfaction, firm culture, compensation, hours, quality of work, business outlook, career outlook, associate/partner relations, formal and informal training, mentoring and sponsorship, pro bono, and leadership transparency.

There was a huge amount of movement in the Top 10 this year. Which firms made the cut? Without any further ado, here are the Top 10 Best Midsize Law Firms to Work For based on Vault’s Annual Associate Survey for 2020:

1. Bookoff McAndrews PLLC (+3)

2. Susman Godfrey LLP (+3)

3. Nutter, McClennan & Fish, LLP (+5)

4. Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger LLP (+8)

5. Wilkinson Walsh + Eskovitz (+1)

6. Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing P.C. (AZA) (not ranked; first time in Top 10)

7. MoloLamken LLP (+10)

8. Downey Brand LLP (+10)

9. Greenspoon Marder (not ranked; first time in Top 10)

10. Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP (+3)

It’s worth noting that Susman Godfrey claimed more No. 1 spots in this year’s rankings than any other firm (not to mention the fact that it also placed as the No. 1 firm for Best Litigation Boutique). That said, here are the No. 1 firms in each Quality of Life category for 2020:
