Another Elite Law Firm Pushes Special Bonus Decision To December

This year's bonus season is shaping up to be quite interesting.

Fresh off the news that Kirkland & Ellis is crossing its fingers and hoping the rest of the market won’t step up with COVID appreciation special bonuses, another firm, this time Selendy & Gay, says they’re not making a decision on bonuses until December.

As you’ll recall (if you can remember anything from before the sad passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg/impending constitutional crisis), Cooley got the COVID appreciation bonuses ball rolling last week. But Davis Polk did not come to play, and they wowed with more money and others have matched that more generous scale. Selendy & Gay may be a relatively new firm, created by former Quinn Emanuel attorneys, but they’re no stranger to the compensation wars. In fact, last year the firm came over the top and beat the Biglaw market rate for bonuses.

But this strong bonus commitment doesn’t mean their associates will see immediate special bonuses. The firm sent around this short missive pushing the decision to the end of the year.

This just adds an additional level of intrigue to the typical year-end bonus season.
