Selendy & Gay Raise Associate Salaries, And I Can't Wait For The Quinn Emanuel Response

Quinn will now have to "match" Selendy & Gay... hahahahahahaha

We have another match of the Milbank associate salary scale, this time from litigation boutique Selendy & Gay.

Here’s the email that went out to all Selendy & Gay personnel this morning:

Selendy & Gay PLLC today announced an increase to base salaries for associates, effective July 2018. This is part of the firm’s commitment to not only give associates substantive work early in their careers, but to compensate them as well or better than the nation’s other leading law firms. Since its launch in February, the firm has grown rapidly while maintaining the culture of inclusion, dedication and service.

“At Selendy & Gay, we are committed to building a tight-knit office culture, focused on critical collaboration, partnership without ego, associate development programs and community growth,” said Founding Partner Jennifer Selendy. “We believe that hiring and retaining supremely talented associates is critical to our success and we are excited to announce this important change in compensation.”

The scale is a match of Milbank.

Selendy & Gay is a new firm, started in part by Faith Gay. If the name Faith Gay rings a bell, that’s because you are a loyal Above the Law reader who remembers John Quinn, of Quinn Emanuel, going absolutely bonkers when Gay (and fellow Quinn alumni Philippe Selendy) left Quinn to start their own firm. You might remember Quinn’s email to the firm after Gay departed via poem:

Faith, I wish I could join in the high minded sentiment you express here. Some day maybe I will be able to. But not yet. At this time I am still perhaps too mindful of other facts.

You can, once again, read the full email here. It’s better if you queue up “Don’t You Want Me” in the background while reading it.

Anyway, as of this moment, associates at Selendy & Gay are slated to make more in base salary than associates at Quinn Emanuel. Or Cravath. S&G > S&C.

This will not last, of course. The big boys will either match Milbank (and Selendy) or come over the top and kick off another round of salary wars. But, right now, it’s still funny. Congratulations to Selendy & Gay associates. Quinn associates… email me.
