Oops (Britney Spears's Dad) Did It Again!

After getting called out in filings for harassing Britney with discovery requests, Jamie Spears is now trying to force Britney into a deposition.

How is this case still happening?

After years of effort, the courts freed Britney Spears from her conservatorship late last year. I know it sounds a little hard to believe in June of 2022, but a court actually decided that an adult woman could have full control over her own life less than a year ago.

But her dad is still fighting?

Britney Spears is not going to sit willingly for a deposition … that was made clear by her lawyer, who filed legal docs saying Jamie Spears is “shameless” by, among other things, asking a judge for a depo date “shortly after his daughter’s wedding and just before Father’s Day.”

Attorney Mathew Rosengart claims in searing legal docs … “Mr. Spears refuses to simply go away, as he should and as any decent man or father would do.” Rosengart goes on to say Jamie is piling up legal fees to rehabilitate his reputation.

Past filings alleged that the Jamie Spears legal team from Willkie Farr was “harassing and bullying” Britney with document requests. This seems to be another chapter in that campaign to break Britney’s resolve through attrition.

[UPDATE: Here’s the latest filing from Britney. It notes that the allegations against Jamie Spears are based on third party evidence rendering any Britney deposition irrelevant at this juncture, which should prove fatal to the request… but it also includes this fun fact which is WILD…

He has repeatedly professed to “love” his daughter—and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on a press tour trying to convince the public of this, for which he billed Britney Spears’s Estate, for so-called “Media Matters”

“Media Matters” is apparently the “further work” of the conservatorship world.’

With the conservatorship over, all that remains are Britney’s claims for an accounting of unjustified payments she claims her dad made despite gross conflicts of interest. That should’ve been a pretty straightforward affair and frankly one that Jamie Spears would be wise to settle and walk away.

Instead he’s been avoiding a deposition and then raised the stakes by trying to make Britney sit for a deposition. It’s not clear how her testimony is relevant to the question of “did Papa Spears have a conflict of interest?” and Greenberg Traurig’s Rosengart agrees, branding the request “morally abominable” and “revenge.”

The push-pull of the legal relationship is always balancing the obligation to serve the client’s wishes and the obligation to serve the client… in spite of those wishes. Some lawyer really needs to tell Jamie Spears that his best hope of improving his reputation right now is to fade into the background. Because scorched earth discovery games when you’ve already lost months ago may satisfy the client ego and rack up fees but they aren’t going to do much for his public persona.
