We have some sad news to report out of the California legal community, where a legend of the Hollywood bar recently passed away. Jake Bloom, 81, made his mark upon the world of entertainment law through his expertly negotiated deals for countless celebrity actors, directors, and producers.

A graduate of Cornell Law, Bloom cofounded Bloom Hergott, which quickly became one of the most successful entertainment law firms in all of Hollywood. With an enviable portfolio of high-profile clients, Bloom became one of the most sought-after attorneys in the industry. Deadline has additional information on some of the luminaries he represented:

His roster included producers Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Jerry Bruckheimer, Charles Roven, John Davis, Larry Gordon and Lorenzo di Bonaventura as well as directors Ron Howard, John Hughes and Brad Bird. …

Bloom was most respected and admired for his representation of the biggest motion picture and television personalities in the world. His clients included actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Patric and Jackie Chan, among many others.

As noted by Variety, Bloom also represented Johnny Depp, securing for the actor a real treasure chest of a deal for his appearance in Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. Depp later filed suit against Bloom Hergott, accusing the firm of mishandling his divorce from Amber Heard, on top of collecting millions of fees without a formal retainer agreement over the course of several decades. A judge ruled in Depp’s favor, and the firm forked over a hefty settlement.

In 2019, a few months prior to his reported eight-figure settlement with Depp, Bloom retired, followed by shortly thereafter by Hergott.

Bloom is survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren.
