Although 2023 is quickly coming to a close, many law firms still have the urge to merge. What better way to begin the new year than with a post-merger integration? That’s what Am Law 200 firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is hoping to achieve with its recently announced merger with IP boutique RatnerPrestia, which will be effective on January 1, 2024.
As noted by the Legal Intelligencer, Buchanan and RatnerPrestia started their merger talks in March, and now that a deal has been struck, 22 attorneys and two patent agents from the mid-Atlantic IP boutique will be joining the larger firm’s IP department. Jonathan Spadt, RatnerPrestia’s CEO and President, will serve as a co-chair of Buchanan’s IP group.
In joining Buchanan, RatnerPrestia’s lawyers will be spread across the firm’s offices in Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. Here are some additional details:

LexisNexis sat down with John Ursin, Managing Partner at Schenck Price, to learn how the firm is using legal AI to strengthen client service and daily legal work.
According to Spadt, 15 of Ratner’s attorneys will be stationed in King of Prussia as part of Buchanan’s Philadelphia area presence, with both leaders considering moving the attorneys to Buchanan’s Philadelphia office once that suburban lease expires. Four of the remaining Ratner attorneys will be working out of Buchanan’s Wilmington office, and the remaining three will be at the firm’s Washington location.
Buchanan chairman Joseph Dougherty told the Intelligencer that the merger with RatnerPrestia is part of the firm’s “aggressive” plans for growth, saying, “We’ve had a strong number of financial years, and we think we’re in a really good position to grow.”
Congratulations to Buchanan Ingersoll and RatnerPrestia on what we’re sure will be a successful merger and integration.
