Squire Sanders & Dempsey: Layoffs and No Offers

Squire, Sanders & Dempsey has already canceled its 2010 summer program. We received information that Squire Sanders decided not to extend offers to anybody in its 2009 class. A tipster reports:

SSD no-offered EVERYONE this year. This isn’t that surprising given that they’ve deferred this year’s class, canceled their 2Ls who were supposed to return for a cameo and have scrapped summer 2010 already. The hiring partner cited the economy and said that they are making no offers at this time but are keeping everyone on an “offer eligible” list for a potential look again some time in the future.

Our tipsters report that this decision came down yesterday.
Above the Law asked the firm about its decision. Apparently, the firm has had a change of heart.
After the jump, Squire Sanders’s new offer plan, and reports of additional stealth layoffs at the firm.

In response to our inquires, a Squire Sanders spokesperson sent this statement to Above the Law:

We have determined to further consider the situation and get back to those whose performance might merit an offer. We do not want to make offers with uncertain start dates and in the near term plan to focus on completing our commitment to the 33 who accepted our offers last fall.

Well, that is great if SSD is reconsidering no offering its entire summer class.
Unfortunately, we have other reports that stealth layoffs occurred at Squire Sanders in the month of August. Squire Sanders has already gone through multiple rounds of layoffs. In August, tipsters reported additional stealth layoffs were taking place at the firm:

Squire Sanders conducted another round of stealth layoffs … SSD [is not] telling us anything.

Our sources report that the partnership is revealing the overall number of layoffs that have been conducted, but we have layoffs reports from multiple Squire Sanders offices.
Squire Sanders declined to respond to our layoff reports. Perhaps they are reconsidering that decision too?
