Biglaw Firm Drops Sponsorship After Golfer Joins LIV Tour

Thank you very little.

golf caddyIn the world of law firm marketing, is there a lot of ROI in golf sponsorships? Other than Nike’s relationship with Tiger Woods, I’m not sure I could correctly match any golfer with their sponsor. That seems like a problem with this advertising strategy.

Anyway, Cozen O’Connor used to sponsor professional golfer Jason Kokrak, but that’s come to an end after he took his talents to Saudi-funded sportswashing outfit LIV Golf.

The firm cited its 9/11 litigation efforts, which pit it against the Saudi government, for the decision. Though it seems like “we want no part of the journalist murdering business” played a role in the move as well.

From the American Lawyer:

Cozen executive chairman and CEO Michael Heller, speaking to Law.com on Thursday, said the firm’s ongoing litigation against the country was a factor in the firm’s decision. “The LIV tour is inconsistent with the mission and values of our firm,” he said in a brief interview. “Jason is a terrific young man and we wish him and his family well.”

The firm says that it’s looking to get back into the PGA or LPGA tours.

Meanwhile, Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice sees a world of Amazons and gas station gouging and decided to throw its antitrust enforcement efforts into probing the PGA Tour.
