Another Biglaw Firm Institutes A 'Reduction In Force,' Laying Off Attorneys And Staff

2022 was not the firm's best year.

layoff noticeSeems like every Biglaw prognosticator is busy throwing up warnings over how the anticipated economic decline is going to impact the legal industry. And with good reason — we’ve already heard associate layoff news from Cooley LLP and Goodwin and Shearman and Gunderson and Kirkland.

Now another Biglaw firm joins the layoff ranks. Procopio, a firm that made $128,919,000 in 2021 gross revenue, making it 194th on the Am Law 200, recently announced a “reduction in force,” letting go both attorneys and staff as part of the cost-cutting measure.

As the firm revealed in an internal email:

Consistent with many of our peer firms, 2022 was not Procopio’s best year. Most experts see “economic headwinds” during 2023. Management has been looking at cost-cutting measures and is in the process of implementing accounts receivable and practice management policies mandating best practices at all levels in the firm, starting at the top with the partners. You hear more about this in the near future.

Over the last couple of days we let go several attorneys and staff as part of a Reduction in Force. This was an especially difficult decision because it impacts our friends and colleagues. We’ve asked our Human Resources team to do everything they can to ease the transition process. We are grateful for their contributions to the firm.
