Law School Threatens To Report Student Lunch Thieves To State Bar

If you plan on stealing other people's food at this law school, you better pray that you don't get caught.

Earlier this month, we brought our readers the lurid tale of a law student whose apple had been stolen from the community refrigerator. Sure, his school-wide email was meant to be taken in jest, but at other law schools, lunch thieves face far worse and more serious consequences than email embarrassment in front of their peers.

Case in point, if you plan on stealing other people’s food at this law school, you’d better pray that you don’t get caught — members of the administration have threatened to report lunch thieves to the relevant state bar authorities…

A tipster from Boston University School of Law says that “refrigerator thefts have gotten so bad that apparently our school is threatening to tell bar examiners if someone’s apple is misappropriated and the culprit is caught.” Wow, that’s dramatic. This is an email students at BU Law were greeted with today:

We sincerely regret that so many students have been impacted by theft from the common refrigerators. If you experience theft from the refrigerator, please contact [redacted] to report the theft, including details such as what was taken, what time it was placed in the refrigerator and when it was discovered missing. We placed signs with the following text on the refrigerators last week, and hope this will deter any further thefts. We are in contact with BUPD to discuss additional options in the event the thefts continue.

BU Law Community, Stealing food is not only wrong – it is also a serious breach of our community standards. Please do not take what is not yours. Please keep in mind that this conduct violates our disciplinary standards, may be prosecuted as such, and may be reported to the relevant bar authorities. Thank you for your cooperation.

Visitors to the BU Law Community: These refrigerators are reserved for the use of the BU Law community ONLY. If we discover you are removing anything from these refrigerators, we will notify Boston University Police and prosecute the theft to the fullest extent of the law. Thank you for your cooperation.

Yes, this seems ridiculous, but the school may be doing everyone a favor by using these scare tactics.

It’s really not worth it to have a character and fitness investigation over a stolen sandwich. After all, if you’re capable of stealing someone else’s lunch, what could stop you from stealing something more important in the future? If you’re unethical enough to take something that doesn’t belong to you and screw over a classmate by leaving him or her hungry, you may be unethical enough to screw over your clients someday.

Don’t give the bar examiners a chance to go down the rabbit hole of things you could be possibly be capable of in the future if you once had the moral turpitude to steal someone’s Doritos while in law school.
